Can we still go to the beach in October?

So, you're planning that all important holiday with your little ones....

It's hard when you go on holiday towards the end of the summer season as you have to plan for all eventualities.

Yesterday we had some really odd weather in Cyprus.

We left the house around 2pm on Saturday afternoon for a trip to the beach armed with our beach chairs, towels and reading matter. As we got into our double cab truck, one look at the sky towards the mountains painted a pretty miserable picture:

 

And this was what faced us as we reached the beach looking towards Episkopi cliffs and the Garrison:

 

But looking in the direction of Limassol itself and towards the east, this was the view we had:

 

I still managed to have swims in the sea in between coming out and getting dry in the hot sunshine and reading my Jack Reacher book (The Affair) on my Kindle.

It did cloud over eventually too much for us to stay any longer but when we arrived home again 15 minutes later, the sun was shining brightly back on our street. However, we did have rather a large puddle on our front patio so it looks like we did the best thing by going out for the afternoon!

Now we know why the Lifeguard on the beach behind us kept checking his walkie talkie and had his camera at the ready!

Was yesterday the last time in the pool for 2011?

We wemt off up to the pool yesterday afternoon at about 2.30pm.

It was a warm day and hardly any breeze but just as we were leaving the house for the short drive to the Aphrodite Club, it clouded over :-(

However, the sun was out when we arrived and we were surprised to find only a few sunbeds available. Only 2 child was in the pool too which was a pleasant surprise. Often on a Sunday, the pool is full of screamers which I'm not very tolerable of.

I was the brave one - I went in the pool TWICE while my husband managed to sit and dangle his ankles into about  3 inches of the pool's surface before deciding it was too cold and that I must be quite mad! I did swim about 4 lengths and as long as I kept moving, it was okay...

After starting my new book - I decided on the Agatha Raisin mystery book The Terrible Tourist, which is set in Kyrenia (Turkish occupied north of Cyprus) and getting into quite a few pages of it, I found it was getting hot and sticky plus the flies were being a right royal pain in the bum (always the case when the weather starts to cool down). No option for it - back in the pool :-D

But, I can't see the weather lasting out long enough for another weekend of pool swimming. I may get into the sea but, we'll see...

Next Saturday in the early evening, we're off to the Angel Bar in Kolossi to help raise funds for Sirius Dog Sanctuary by attending Wez Thompson's book signing of "Alfie - A Dog's Tail". It starts at 6pm (if you want to see the signing, that is) followed by food at 7pm and a live band around 9pm.

Tickets are €10pp. Get tickets from all SBA Hives, and D N Satellite and Cable Solutions in Kolossi.

Remember, all funds from this charity event go to Sirius Dog Sanctuary in Moni, Limassol.

Green Monday, Cyprus Weather and Chemtrails

Conspiracy Theories, Chemtrails and the Weather.

So, the weathermen were correct! Green Monday has been a definite day for a mixed bag of weather....

Fine and sunny this morning with some cloud, overcast by lunchtime until the heavens opened with torrential rain followed by hailstone - for all of 10 minutes. Back to sunshine, clouding over later this afternoon.

All I can say is I'm betting it will go dark before tomorrow!

Now, that leads me onto my next thought..... Chemtrails, do they or don't they exist? Is someone really trying to control our weather in Cyprus as is often discussed in the Cyprus Mail online version of our daily newspaper? I'm not certain I believe it, but I do so love a conspiracy theory.

Cyprus weather has been very good to us this week.

The weather this week has been fantastic for this time of year.

It's 7 years this week that we came to live permanently in Cyprus and this is the mildest winter we've had so far.

Temperatures this week have been displayed as 20c most days but it does look like Green Monday is likely to be a bit of a let down for those who are planning going out to eat veggies and fly their kites :-(

But hey, we've got a couple of days of gorgeous weather before then and who knows - the miserable weather may just pass us by!

Sunday 19th December

Yeahey, the weather is glorious today with a light breeze and sunny skies.

It's sooooooo good, I can hang my washing out!

We're off to Ryan's Grill at the end of Akrotiri strip in a short while for a slap up Sunday lunch buffet to have a pre-Christmas celebration with our good friends Helen, Dave, Barry & Vera. I'm hoping we get a table in the room overlooking the salt lake!

Dust storm hits Cyprus - December 2010

We had some really "iffy" weather yesterday in Cyprus....

We woke to very windy weather and a touch of rain and then as I was leaving for work we could see a reddish/yellow cloud coming slowly up from the bottom of the street.

It looks like Lady Sahara may have sent one of her famous clouds across the water to us!

We managed to get some shots with the camera of the sun covered by the dust and appearing as silver instead of golden yellow.

However, today - it's bright and sunny with a gorgeous turquoise sky!

Our solar powered lights are working again!

You know what that means then?

Yep, got it in one! The sun is shining again.........

Not for long apparently :-( Looks like we may have a few nasty days ahead of us but picking up again soon.

We got rain yesterday and boy, it poured down - all day!

It finally went and did it yesterday....

The heavens opened and we were deluged for most of the day or at least from around 11am in Limassol.

We had heavy rain, lightning and thunder with the roads being flooded and rivers of rain water pouring down the  street where I work to the roundabout at St Nicholas.

The bad weather continued through the night, knocking our satellite tv off from about 6.30pm for an hour and the thunder, lightning and strong winds were ongoing when we went to bed just before midnight. And, it tripped the power of course!

The weather forecast isn't much better for the weekend either. We got up to rain again this morning and although it did brighten for a spell, it's going a bit murky again as I type....

This one below is of my office. I do work with other people but they abandoned me for a fag break! We're moving soon to a slightly different location but a bit closer to the Post Office.

Yeahey!

The car started with no trouble this morning and got me to work and home again this evening with no trouble at all. Phew!!!!!

It's been another nice and sunny day but temperatures are back to normal for this time of year, which means around 22c - 24c in the daytime and it's around 18c just now as I'm updating my blog for today (20:04 Cyprus time).

But.... it's not looking so good for Akrotiri weather at the weekend :-(

I will try to keep the camera handy to keep you update!

Meanwhile, I'm very much looking forward to my friend Jeans' arrival on 26 December. She comes to see us every year and always stays at the same hotel on the seafront. I'm hoping to take a couple of days away from work at the beginning of her stay and planning to have New Year's Eve free in case there's some last minute shopping we may fancy!

Not sure when the shops are open over the festive period but my office is closed on Christmas Eve....

Watch out for the pre-Christmas sales if you're here on holiday. We tend to do things a little differently when it comes to sales in Cyprus!

The Weather and Car Trouble.

Yeah well, it finally went and did it!

Last night the heavens opened and it well and truly leathered it down on us in good old sunny Cyprus.... Over in the West (Paphos direction) we could see a fabulous electrical storm but did we get that excitement? No, not on your nelly!

Heavy rain during the evening before we went to bed and part way through the night too. I woke up around 5am and it was still raining but not as heavy and this morning, up at 07:30 to sunshine and cooler temperatures than of late although in keeping with those as normal for December.

It's stayed bright and sunny all day!

Got to the car this evening and couldn't get in it..... My central locking system plays up a lot and especially in winter but tonight, the battery was as flat as a flute. I managed to get in by the passenger door and had to phone my lovely other half to come into town to give me a jump start.

Will see how this turns out in the morning...... watch this space.

What a fabulous month November has been in Cyprus!

We've had an absolutely gorgeous month!

My parents arrived for their annual monthly visit on 3rd November and have had only 1 overcast day. They've spent everyday on a sunlounger by the pool, walked along the seafront at the Amathus end of Limassol tourist area and fed the stray cats there.

The afternoon is usually spent having a cup of tea and a biscuit at Chasers Bar (near to the Esso filling station) at Ayios Tychonas. Price €2 each and comes in a pot rather than a teabag in a cup!

They go back home tomorrow and will have to deal with the freezing cold UK weather.  Luckily, they only have a few weeks back home and then they will be off for their annual visit to Malta.

Lucky them! 

Bring on retirement so we can join in please......
